Reflection

It has been ages since I last blogged, so i thought while I have some time of rest that I'd reflect on the past few weeks of life.

Lately, my life consists of music classes like: Chorale, Diction, Music Theory, Vocal Lesson, etc. They are actually really interesting to me. I feel like I'm becoming a better musician because of them, but at the same time they can be extremely draining because they are so constant.

I am really enjoying dorm life on campus, and closeness of friends that it brings. Sometimes my friends and I do the most random things to keep ourselves sane (or maybe I should insane). I have gone bowling a couple times with friends since I've been in Cleveland, I have played with a frisbee with friends a bunch of times, I've played some horse shoes, watched the Disney movie Tarzan the other day...

I like eating with friends at the cafe, even though sometimes the food isn't what you'd call "gourmet". The conversations are always the highlight for me; I really enjoy getting to know people, and listening to their stories.

I have also been involved in a Thirst Group that meets at a local coffee shop called "The Mill". We meet together to be transformed by God, and to be active in our faith as we grow. I love it so much!

Well, that's all I feel like writing about right now, but hopefully more is to come very soon!

I will also try to remember to take pictures again.

Got myself a Library Card today. I was only allowed to check out two items for my first visit, but I can check out a bunch when I go back next time. So I checked out the DVD, "Cold Mountain" (because I have never seen it), and the book, "Black Hawk Down" by Mark Bowden (because I have the movie, and want to read the book). I also borrowed the book, "House" by Frank Peretti & Ted Dekker from our church's library. I've never read any of Peretti's books, but I have read a few of Dekker's, and I liked them. I hope to make another trip pretty soon...any takers?

I picked up my own copy of Twilight today...I originally borrowed my bro's copy when I first read it. I also added onto my Potter collection with the second book, Chamber of Secrets. And, I picked a copy of J.M. Barrie's Peter Pan for a fun little read.

On a side note, I also picked up my Georgia State Driver's License yesterday. Apparently, GA's DMV is called DDS (Department of Driver Services).

I am a big fan of hats.

I always like trying on hats when I go into a store, or at least goggle the selection presented.

When we were in Monterey, my parents went to Bubba Gump's Shrimp Co. Restaurant one time, and I remember my mom called me and asked if I wanted one of their hats. I, being a huge fan of Forrest Gump, instinctively replied, "YEAH!" So, that's how I got this hat. Of course, I later went to Bubba Gump's a couple times myself and enjoyed the atmosphere and food, but my point is that I love this hat. It goes without saying that you always need a good hat, ya know? I have other hats, but they're either are two shallow around the head or a little crooked somehow.

Some people have power ties, some have a lucky pair of jeans, but my cherished article of apparel is my hat.

Intramural Sports

A week or two ago, I was browsing Truett's website (the college I'm going to attend) to see what I could learn about the student activities they offer. I found the intramural sports page, and that peeked my interest. Sure, basketball sounded fun, along with flag football...but when I saw the sport of all sports on the list, euphoria took ahold me. That's right folks...PING PONG!!! I am SO going to go buy my own paddle now...I'm definitely going to need to make myself a jersey...Oh, how the ideas keep coming. What I'd give for a table of my own...I probably could fit one in my new room...I could definitely put one in our huge basement....hmmm.

This morning, my parents and I went to meet the Senior Pastor and his wife on their dock to ride their boat to a restaurant for breakfast! It was pretty good food, and it was beautiful weather for a boat ride.

Tonight, we are supposed to go meet them again at the dock to go see some fireworks on the lake!

In Other News...

Yesterday was my dad's birthday, so we went out to the Mall of Georgia in Buford (what a name for a town, right?). We ate at the Macaroni Grill there, and it was delicious. Then, we walked around the mall to a few different shops. We had a pretty good time there...I'd like to go back again.

I finally bought the New Moon book the other day, and I'm already a few chapters into it. Pretty intense so far.

I also bought the Twilight DVD and watched it yesterday...I still like the book more (obviously). But I'm liking all of the Special Features that it includes, like interviews, documentaries, etc.

My room, and the rest of the house really, is looking more homey every minute (Thanks to my dearest mother). Virtual Tour of the crib is coming soon.

First Full Day

I had a pretty good day.

Woke up and went to the 4th of July Celebration with my pops, re-met (i.e. forget that you met them already or forgot their name) tons of people.

Participated in the service. Really digged the first song...Endlessly.

Went back to hotel, and kept an eye on the dog while mom went to the service.

Then, went out to eat with people in the church at O'Charley's...had a little steak and 'taters.

Went back to the hotel, and chilled for most of the afternoon.

Went to the only bookstore in town and bought the first Harry Potter for my new collection. I almost bought New Moon as well, but I didn't have the cash (still waiting on the new bank to give me my debit card).

The nerd in me wants to get one the Harry Potter game for my mac...we shall see if that pans out.

BTW on a COMPLETELY random note...when the heck did Billy Mays die? It seems like people are dropping like flies these days, or maybe I've just been so out of tune with pop culture these days...hmmm.

New Hometown

Well, we made it to Gainesville! We're staying in a hotel for a couple of days, waiting for the moving van and the day we can move in. Tomorrow, we're going to the 4th of July Celebration called, "ONE" at Lakewood. It is named "ONE" because they putting everyone in the church from both kinds of services: Real Life Worship (Contemporary) and Crosspoint (Blended); so I'm excited!

The final count for our quest to find all 50 state license plates is 44 plates! Pretty good, considering we were in the bottom half of the U.S. for the whole trip. We really just needed the Northeastern states like Connecticut. I'm actually quite impressed we got as many as we did, so...Hooray!

Twilight is good...I'm still very much enjoying it.

I'm getting really excited for Half-Blood Prince to come out in theaters...19 days left.

Don't have a lot of time, we are just at starbucks, because for some reason Motel 6 charges for WiFi in East Texas but not in West Texas....what's up with that!?

Anywho, we visited some more relatives today and drove some more. I am about halfway through Twilight, and I'm starting to enjoy it more and more...I kinda wanna watch the movie again.

We went by Fort Worth where my mom was born today, and also went by Weatherford High School, which is the school that Friday Night Lights is about. Went to a Sonic, which was fun (don't have many of those in SoCal). Might be able to get to GA in time for the Independence Day Service at Lakewood!

Well, after a long drive, we finally made it to Texas! And, with it came...that's right you guessed it: MORE HEAT!!! Fortunately, we were in a car with AC for most of the trip, so I can't really complain. Moving on...

I started reading the book Twilight yesterday, and have read about a quarter of the book. I'll admit that I'm liking it more than the movie (as is the case, most of the time) I'll let you know what I think of it when I'm done.

I also forgot to mention in my last blog, that while we've been driving, we've been looking and marking down all 50 state license plates. We've spotted about 30 something so far, and 28 of them were from CA to AZ.

Lately...

I feel like all that I've been blogging about these days has been Harry Potter, and here is yet another post related to said topic. I have officially finished the whole Harry Potter Book Series, and I must say that it was such a great set of books! I loved every book up to the very last chapter of Deathly Hallows, and I can't wait until the rest of the movies come out! If you haven't read the series for whatever reason, I highly recommend reading them if you are interested in some amazing fiction.

Moving onward, if you haven't heard yet, my parents and I are moving to Gainesville, GA as my dad will be taking up a position at a church called Lakewood Baptist Church. He will be doing the music in the Crosspoint Service which is geared towards more of the traditional side as far as music, but is not solely intended for an elderly congregation, as it welcomes all age groups. I've got a feeling he's going to do very well at his new job, and I have no doubt that God will bless him and that ministry! Meanwhile, I will be going to school in a town just outside of Gainesville called Cleveland (not Ohio). The school is called Truett McConnell College, and I will be majoring in Music with a concentration in Contemporary Musical Worship! I am seriously stoked to go there, and can't wait to get on campus (where I'll be living).

Right now, we are on the road visiting family and checking out some random scenic spots on the way. We left yesterday from Riverside after the movers arrived for my stuff, and made it to AZ to visit my dad's mom or as I call her, "Mamoo". Today, we visited my mom's dad or as I call him, "Poppy". It has been great seeing relatives, and look forward to seeing a few more today!

Fact: It is FREAKIN' hot in Phoenix...I'm not joking...seriously: One Hundred & Eleven DEGREES!

Anywho, I'm sitting in an It's A Grind with my pops sipping on an Arnold Palmer, and enjoying some free WiFi. Well, I think that's pretty much everything I can think of right now. I miss and love all of my Cali Friends and Fam, so until next time...Peace be with you!

Totally Gonna Make It

I forgot to mention that I finished "Order of the Phoenix" in less than a week, and now I'm more than halfway through "Half-Blood Prince". So...BOOYAH!!! I'm totally gonna finish the book before the movie comes out. I'm stoked because I've never really read a book before seeing the movie representation of it...so this should be quite an experience. However, I honestly have enjoyed reading all of the previous books after I have already seen the movies, so we'll see if I change my mind.

Today, Nathan at Sandals taught from John 3:22-36.
The passage talks about John the Baptist, and how some of his followers were getting jealous and worried when people started following Jesus instead (go figure).

²⁷To this John replied, "A man can receive only what is given him from heaven. ²⁸You yourselves can testify that I said, 'I am not the Christ but am sent ahead of him.' ²⁹The bride belongs to the bridegroom. The friend who attends the bridegroom waits and listens for him, and is full of joy when he hears the bridegroom's voice. That joy is mine, and it is now complete. ³⁰He must become greater; I must become less.

Nathan's three points were:

Jesus is the only person worth giving your life to!
Jesus reveals the truth we need for living!
Jesus is the only way to settle your relationship with God!

My Thoughts:
When I was listening to this message, my mind went to something my dad said in a message he taught a few weeks ago. He talked about spiritual transformation, and how we as followers of Christ are in a process of becoming more and more like Christ not by our works but by the Holy Spirit. It happens through Joy, Grace, and Discipline...in other words, we have to train ourselves in Spiritual Disciplines.
For me, I can get so focused on my own spiritual growth, and forget that I need to continually serve and love others at the same time. I'm so glad there is grace.
Anyway, my thoughts are obviously scattered, but that's how my mind works!

For the past few...well months, I have been reading all of the Harry Potter books in hopes of finishing the Half-Blood Prince before it comes out in theaters on July 15th. It's on a Wednesday if I'm not mistaken, which I thought was kinda bizarre. So anyway, I have 'til then to finish the 2nd Half of Goblet of Fire, All of Order of Phoenix, and Half-Blood Prince. That's a lot of pages.

John 3:16 and Why Jesus?

This is a very lengthy post. (Consider yourself warned).

This morning I went to Sandals' service and listened to a guy named Neil talk about John 3:16-21 as they continued their study in the Gospel of John called "The Visitation."

The message is on their website or you can join their podcast on iTunes if you wish to hear it, but I will just try to clue you in on a little bit of what he said...

He first addressed the truth that the verse John 3:16 "For God so loved the world..." has been shared and used many times in our culture. I can attest to this alone just from seeing “Christian” apparel and various other products with this verse put on it to make it "Christian". Then, he moved onto reading the passage (vs.16-20) verse by verse pointing out words that were significant to him, and along the way supplying points and explaining to each part of the message.

At one point, he talked about the word "believe" in the passage, and how we as Christians are called to do just that, believe. He didn't go to deep into what he meant by “believe”, but he did say that believing in Christ is not just acknowledging his existence and that he died and rose again. He said it is also about believing in Jesus' character, what He did, and what He wants to do in your life, which I think is true. However, I think another way to put it would be whenever a person truly believes in anything, there needs to be evidence of that belief in their life. For example, if I truly believe that the Tooth Fairy exists, I am going to put as many teeth as I can under my pillow in hopes of money in return; maybe even leave a "Thank You" note. The same is true for believers of Christ. If we believe in Christ, we must also believe in His mission and whole perspective of the world, and show that we believe by our thoughts, words, and actions. Don't get me wrong, I think the message that was said was helpful and the truth, but I just felt that these specific points needed some clarification.

Another point he brought up was about Jesus being the "only way" and why. He said that because God loved the world, Jesus is the only way. He pointed out the fact that we can't do it on our own, and how darkness started in the Garden (Genesis 3). This is true, but I would have added that God always had a plan to use His "Son" to spread the "Good News" throughout the world. By "Son", I mean God's people, the Israelites. They were supposed to (as the chosen people) display God's Kingdom to the world, but instead they got caught up in thinking that they were better than everyone else, and frequently fell into a vicious cycle of being in the Lord's favor, falling away from God, and turning back to Him...over and over and OVER! Time after time, God was gracious with them until finally he let the Israelites fall into their sin and its consequences.

Enter Jesus the Christ. Jesus came as the "Son of God" to be what the Israelites were intended to be in the first place! He frequently talked about and displayed the Kingdom of God His whole life, and as the representative of God's people, He took upon the sin of His people and the world. Being sinless, he suffered an undeserved crime and because of that, he was able to defeat sin. Then, through the Spirit, rise again as New Creation. Afterwards, He was with His disciples and other followers for 40 days, and when it was time, gave them final instructions to display and spread God's message and Kingdom throughout the world. Finally, He went to be with the Father until it is time to come back and destroy sin, once and for all.

THAT is why I believe Jesus said, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." (John 14:6)

I think Neil told the truth of the Gospel in a way that it is taught many times, but to me it seems like only a fraction of a story that needs to be told in its entirety.

This may be much to read and digest, as it has been for me, but I believe that we should not at all water-down the Gospel. I have no bitterness or malice towards Neil or Sandals Church at all, but I just wanted to tell what I think is the message in the Bible. I would love to hear anybody's thoughts, and would kindly ask that if you do comment, that it is out of love, as I intended this post to be.

Side Note: I'll probably be making another post about what it means or how to display God's Kingdom some time in the near future.

I'm going to go to CBU in the fall to study Graphic Design.

My sister and I moved into our apartment last week, and we are still putting up photos and decorations, but for the most part, all the boxes are empty!

I Had A Good Hair Day!

The Haircut Dilemma

My hair is just weird.

I have been growing my hair out lately and it has gotten pretty long...I'm still kinda in that "awkward length" phase where you can't do much with it except wear a hat over it.

My Head of Hair:
My left side likes to be all wavy and a little curly, but my right side likes to be straight and just a little wavy.

My front has a cow-lick and widow's peak. My back is curly at the ends...almost mullet status.

I really don't like dealing with my hair, which is why I haven't gotten a haircut in a while (I don't like haircuts). Although, I love the low or no-maintenance short/buzz cut that lasts for a few weeks or so, but that means getting routine haircuts.

It's such a Catch-22.

P.S. My mom is also weird.

The Mystery Lights

My friend's band (The Mystery Lights) played in Cannery Row last night, and a few of us went to the show to see and support him. It was pretty fun...2 other bands played which were your average garage "Punk-Ramones" bands. When will they learn to experiment with different tempos and volume? My friend, Nathan, and I were clapping the beat they would play even before the songs started. Anyways, I'm not writing to bash the bands that played, only to say that The Mystery Lights were the best band that played by far. Plenty of talent and energy in the band along that reminded me of The Who meets Surf-Rock. If you wanna listen to some of their songs go here, but I must say that they sounded better live...and their new songs on their CD are better than what they have their myspace.

Baller! Da da da DANG!?

Lately, I've been brushing up on my basketball skills again by playing on the court in our complex. Mostly, I've just been shooting around...practicing free throws and such. The other day, I was on the court playing around, and another guy comes up and starts playing on the other half of the court. After a few minutes, he finally comes over and says, "Hey! You wanna play a game?" So I say, "Sure!" and we agree to a game to 11 by 1's with 3-pointers as 2 pts. We start playing and he just decimates me with shot after shot! Before I know it, the score is 1 to 10 with him winning. So, I got the ball again and shoot four 2-pointers in a row and a one-pointer...now it's 10-10!!! He ends up getting the ball, shoots and misses...I grab the ball and put in a final 2-pointer to clench the game!
His name was Junior, and he was a crack-up. He just kept smiling the whole time and would curse every once and a while under his breath when he'd miss a shot or if I made one, made me laugh every time. We both started heading home and decided that we would have to have a rematch sometime soon. So, until next time, Junior!

Technological Turmoil

Argh! I hate dealing with haywire technology. For some reason, about a week or two ago, our modem and router decided to go on the fritz and not provide internet. So, I tried everything, and it resulted in nada. Called the provider, who was, of course, no help. Finally, we bought the providers new modem/router all-in-one, and we finally have WiFi again. Good news, we have internet, bad news...we gave into the man. C'est la vie...

This morning, I took Katie (my dog) out for a walk, while taking our recycled items to the bin outside. When we got to bin, I put her leash handle in my pocket, and put the bag inside. But, once I lifted my arms up, the handle popped out and landed on the ground making a huge "POP!" sound. Katie freaked out, and started running, but the leash and sound kept following her - so she kept running (basically in circles). I could not stop laughing - in a sort of sympathetic way. Finally, I grabbed her by the leash, and she calmed down. The rest of our trip wasn't quite as dramatic, but pleasant enough for the both of us.

Oh, my word, a lot has gone on since I last blogged!

Item #1:

My parents and I sold our house and moved back into an

apartment. I dig it.

Item #2:

I visited Riverside last week because we were giving my Bro/Sis-in-Law/Sis our refrigerator, washer, and dryer. Also, I got to check out their Wii...sweet deal.

Item #3:

I have been reading a lot!!! I started the Harry Potter series the other day and I'm close to being done with the first book. I'm also still reading The Faith with my community group and church. And, I'm trying to find time to read Simply Christian...I still haven't finished it yet.

Item #4:

I finally received my copy of No Line On The Horizon by U2. Amazing! Listened to it all yesterday. What's up with the 360 Tour only being on the East Coast?? They better add more dates and venues.

Item #5:

I'm playing this weekend on the Worship Team, and I'm going to be playing both Drums & Guitar! HUH!? Well, I'm playing drums the first half and guitar the second half. And, I'm also going to be playing to a click track on one of the songs because we are syncing a video to it...wish me luck.

Well, I think that covers the gist of it all. Oh, and my birthday is coming up...

Our church is about to plunge into a new series called, "The Faith" based off of Chuck Colson's book, also called "The Faith". The series and book is about the foundational and basic beliefs of the Christian worldview. The mantra of the book is, "What Christians Believe, Why They Believe It, and Why It Matters."

So far, I've read the first couple of chapters, and only have a couple more to go until I'm prepared for this Sunday's message (we were asked to read the 1st four chapters). And, all of small groups are involved in the book/study/DVD interview that we have been encouraging everyone to join in on. I watched one of the talks on the DVD the other day between Chuck and the interviewer Gabe Lyons (founder of the Fermi Project), and it's really good stuff.

All in all, I can't wait to finish the next two chapters, and begin to discuss it in our community group.

I-HELP

A bunch of people from my community went and served for I-HELP with our church.
"On the fourth Monday of each month, we host approximately twenty-five homeless men here at SVCC. Volunteers can assist in dinner preparation and serving (two to three hours), and men can volunteer to spend the night here with the men."

Invisible Children has made a new film, 'The Rescue: of Joseph Kony’s Child Soldiers,' and you need to go watch it on their website. Just click on the picture on the left.
Then, you need to attend to "The Rescue" on April 25th at a hosted city near you. We need to tell our governments around the world that we are serious about rescuing the 3000 abducted child soldiers in Joseph Kony's LRA located in Uganda. Therefore, we will abduct ourselves and ask our world leaders to form a plan on how to rescue these invisible children and bring Kony to justice.
Take some time, and go on the website to watch, sign up, donate, get involved, spread the word, and advocate justice for those who have no voice. After all, much of God's kingdom is about loving those who are oppressed, spreading His peace to every corner of the world, and putting the world to rights.

Men's Rally

Every 1st and 3rd Tuesday of the month, our church has Men's Rally, and it is awesome! A group of men meet together in a room on campus, and we have a bible study (usually). I have recently started making it a habit of going, and have really enjoyed and learned from it. Presently, we are going through the "questions" in the gospel of John.
This week's question was found in John chapter 13, when Jesus is washing his disciples' feet. After he washes them all, he asks, "Do you understand what I have done for you?" (vs. 12 NIV) It is amazing to see everyone participate in the study with asking questions and sharing their insight.
This week, I had the opportunity of leading the guys in a few songs of singing praise. I love that they don't care what sound comes out of their mouths, rather they care about what's coming from their hearts.
I'm hoping to get some younger guys to go with me soon. I'm the youngest man there by quite a few years, and I think all ages would benefit from the sharing that goes on. If you're a guy, and you can come on Tuesdays, please come!

A Little Valentine's Day Bowling

Went bowling today with a few friends at the downtown alley. I love the shoes they make you wear...I wanna go pick me up a pair at some thrift store. Today, I sported the leather green and yellow kind, where one side is yellow and the other is green. I bowled an amazing 107, with I think one strike the whole game. The second game, I stepped it up a notch with an unprecedented 127! I did everything imaginable: stepped over the line for a fault, a couple of spares, got some strikes, and of course a few gutter balls. For a while, we were the only people there bowling, haha, it was awesome.

Upside-Down

Went walking with the 'rents and dog today to get some exercise. We ended up taking a route by the local Starbucks, and I decided to pick up a macciato. I usually get it "upside-down," but I don't ever enjoy the end with all the caramel at the bottom, so I went regular today. I actually liked it a lot more because I could actually taste the espresso shots as opposed to all the sugar.
This has inspired me to try out some different drinks that aren't so sugary, ya know? My other fav right now is getting a Black Iced Tea Lemonade (basically an Arnold Palmer) w/ no sweetener. I especially like to keep the plastic cups for reusing with regular tea or recycling.

Coraline in 3D

I went and saw this movie tonight called, "Coraline" and I thought it was really good. Very creative and inviting. It was done by the same director as The Nightmare Before Christmas, Henry Selick. And it is based on a book that a guy named, Neil Gaiman, who has written books, poems, songs, dramas, etc. The film is all stop-motion and all the characters, sets, and props are all hand-made. To top it all off, it is in 3D, and it's out in theaters, so go see it!

I don't like it when I want to write a song, and I can't come up with something good. But, when I'm not thinking about it, an idea for a song will come to me and I'll forget about it. What's that about? Something I do like is using Photo Booth's video recording feature to do little memos of song ideas, so I don't have to write them down right away.

The Tightrope of Book-Reading

For the longest time, I hated reading.

You see, public school (from elementary to high school) forced me to read books I usually had no interest in. In essence, "HERE, READ THIS NOW!" Don't misunderstand me, I appreciate the importance of perusing the classics of the past, and reading famous lines in wonder of great authors. But, I believe that reading should be something a person enjoys and learns from. A person should have the freedom to select which books he or she wants to read according to their own taste.

Over the years, I have overcome the scars of the compulsory classroom classic-novel chore; I can now take pleasure in reading books on my own. At first, it was a bit like my experience of riding a bike. I rode a long time using training wheels, but eventually I began pedaling on my own without a handicap, racing down streets with the wind in my face.

Time has past, and now it has become habit to take a book wherever I go. I have taken note that I really savor books that offer a learning experience. In other words, books that can teach me something new. Not necessarily instruction manuals on how to fix toasters, but rather books that challenge my mind and offer me new information. For instance, presently, I am reading a book by N.T. Wright called, "Simply Christian," and it definitely has depth or "meat" in it. Often times, I have to reread paragraphs to try and understand what he is trying to say.
On the flip side, if I read too many books that offer knowledge and provoke thought, then it starts becoming a heavy load on my mind. Therefore, I also favor books that offer creativity, literary themes, new vocabulary, and most of all, a good story. One book in this category that I loved was by Ted Dekker titled, "Thr3e," which was a suspense novel that took amazing dramatic plot twists.

Tonight, I am going to begin another book by the same author called, "Blink".

Can anyone else relate to this experience of being forced to read certain books in school?

Holy of Holies

I am so excited, because, tomorrow, we are going to be talking about the Temple in our community group. We are going to dive into Hebrews 10, which I encourage you to read. We will discuss the importance and purpose of the temple/tabernacle for God and His people. We will also talk about how that relationship plays out with God and His people (including us) today and why it is so significant.

To me, it's such a rich topic because of the implications that a passage, like Hebrews 10, can make. I love history and literature, so when I read the bible or a book about the bible, it is so exciting to be able to know that there is history and truth and significance throughout each book, along with the realization that it is all just one big story that has been passed down for generations. And here's the twist: We are still writing it!

I am afraid.

Not of failing to meet due dates or earning poor grades.

Not of my teachers, who can admittedly be a little intense.

No, I am afraid of not making a difference for the sake of God's Kingdom at school. That is my biggest fear: Not having an impact on the lives of people I see every week. I agree with the idea that I can be a missionary at school, work, the grocery store, public restrooms, etc.

I want to be display God's Kingdom as best I can, not holding back, but I feel like I would just be rejected and unsuccessful. This is a petty fear to hold onto, but I want to be honest because I want so badly to live my life according God's will. I just don't feel confident enough to do so at school.

I am not saying that when I go to school, I am a completely different guy. I am just saying that I don't see myself being effective.

I think one reason that is so hard for me is because I am on my own when I'm in class. There isn't someone there to encourage me, as silly as that sounds. I know I need to rely on God more than the help of man, but still, having a friend, I think, would help.

Does this make any sense? Comments?

Clear and Concentrated

For a long time I have wrestled with the idea of what God wants me to do with my life and what decisions I want to make to honor Him. I started typing up some goals and lifestyle choices that I think will help me as I live each day out while also having an eternal perspective on my life:

I want to be able to share God's story with others around the world, including those near my home.

From there, I want to be able to live a life devoted to serving and loving other people while training other Christians into leading small groups or house churches, so that they can lead and train others to grow and make disciples.

I also want to use the gifts that I have been blessed with to praise God and bring glory to him by displaying His kingdom to people through my life.

Every day as I pursue these goals, I want to constantly have a close connection with God and His Holy spirit, to be transformed and renewed into His likeness.

I am committed to loving God.

These goals are far from perfect, but I believe that for now they will help me concentrate on how I can love God and show that love to others through my life. I hope this helps others as well.

Crazy Love

I just finished reading Francis Chan's book called "Crazy Love". It's about breaking free of the status quo and fully embracing a life displaying a wild love for God and getting a better picture of who God really is. I listen to Chan's messages through his church's podcasts and have always found his teaching to be from the bible and truthful. I am encourage by his words and actions with his church, Cornerstone with how they love people and passionately give themselves to the Kingdom. If you need to be reminded of God's love and the life he wants us to have, then I encourage you to find a copy of Crazy Love either from a friend or if you want to, go buy it.

I will end this post with a quote from the book, "My hope and prayer is that you finish this book with hope, believing that part of your responsibility in the body of Christ is to help set the pace for the church by listening and obeying and living Christ. Knowing that God has called us each to live faithful and devoted lives before Him, by the power of His Spirit. You do not need to preach to your pastor or congregation; you simply need to live out in your daily life the love and obedience that God has asked of you."

Translation: I don't like final exams...yuck!

They are almost over, though. I have approx. two more: Math (blah!) & Nature Photography (should be easy). The reason I say, "approximately" is that I have an oral interview with my Spanish instructor, and we are talking completely in Spanish for 5 min. about anything.

This weekend, I'm playing drums in the worship team, so I'm looking forward to that. We had practice last night, and I got to jingle some x-mas bells for one song, fun stuff.

After Thursday of next week, I will be out of school until Jan. 20th, can I hear a "Holla!"

I miss reading my books. I haven't gotten to read practically any of my library at home for quite a number of weeks, and it saddens me.

Last Update: Yesterday, I had to do an oral presentation for my Spanish class for 5 min. as well. I was required to talk about something to do with Hispanic culture, so I talked about music. It was sweet...I shared info. about Julio and Enrique Iglesias, Ricky Martin, & Carlos Santana. Then, I showed a short clip of "Black Magic Woman" from YouTube, and then finished it off by handing out percussion instruments, and teaching them two songs in Spanish. First, I taught them the Birthday song, and we sang to Jesus. Finally, I played and sang La Bamba for them. It was actually pretty fun.

CSUMB's New Library

This morning, I had some time before my photo class, so I checked out the new library on campus. It just opened 3 days ago on Dec. 1st (it was supposed to open months ago). Parking is crazy, I finally found a spot though. This building is huge! It has little rooms for study groups to meet in with a big tv, table, and media player. Nice computers, nice furniture, nice architecture, but ironically, it is not full of books...hmmmmm.

This past week, I visited my bro and sis's home in Riverside, had coffee with some friends, then went to AZ to hang out with my granny, Mamoo (Actual Name: Lena).

Right now, I'm sitting with my dad in an "It's A Grind". We're on our mac's, surfing the web and enjoying our delicious drinks.

Tomorrow, we head to my Uncle Al's house in Golden Canyon to eat with my extended family.

After that, we're going to visit my mom's side of the fam.

Then, we're going back to Riverside, and then back home.

It's a lot of driving, but it's worth it to see my family.

Today, the phrase "the whole nine yards" came into my family's conversation at lunch time, and I sat there knowing well what the phrase meant, but curiously not knowing the origin of it. So, I am sitting in an It's A Grind Coffee Shop and I Wiki'd it. Here is the most common explanation of the origin.
"One of the most common explanations is that it dates from the Second World War, where "nine yards" was the length of an aircraft machine-gun ammunition belt, and to "go the full nine yards" was to use it up entirely. Machine gun belts were 27 feet long."

NERD ALERT:
It happened on a Wednesday. My community group was over at my house and it was slowly coming to the end of the night. At one point it was just the guys and me hanging out for a little while and we were by the table. Someone had used a crossword booklet for something hard to write on...well...we found it and gave it a go. Soon, we were nailing word after word onto the page with a pen. Before we knew it, it was 11pm and we all were a bit delirious. We never finished the puzzle, but I picked up the same booklet some day after that happening and started to work my way through the first few puzzles. Now, I can't stop...and they ain't easy.

SIDE NOTE:
My dad is the crossword puzzle master, and I go to him for help on answers...I find myself constantly asking, "How do you know this stuff!?" He just smirks.

Unfortunately, my teacher for my early class didn't show up to class again. So, I went down the road to the Starbucks, grabbed a cup of joe, and then walked to Michael's. I was looking for a black frame for an 8x10 photo, but with a white matte because my nature photography is having an exhibit on campus and we all participate (Black frame w/ white matte is what the class decided). So I was looking around in the "Frames" section (good place to look), and I found one that was 10x13 matted for 8x10, pretty nice...$10 (decent price). I took it to the counter and it was $5! Score! So I'm pretty stoked that I found it, plus I can give it to my mom or hang something in my room when we're done with the exhibit. Sweet Deal!

Question: I was looking at poster board and foam board (the stuff you do science projects on) and they are all around a couple bucks. Are these good for taking seamless white background photos?

I rarely pay McDonald's a visit for food, but I recently did because it is the closest fast food joint near my house. Anyways, I went through the drive-thru, ordered my meal, payed, and then received my food. As the employee passed me the bag they said, "See you soon!"....wait, what? Before I could react, they disappeared behind their window and so I drove off. At first, I thought maybe she didn't mean to say it because we obviously didn't know each other, and I wasn't going to see her anytime soon. I also remembered making mistakes like that on the job; just spouting programmed responses to people despite what kind of relationship I had with the person. But, I came to learn that it is normal for McDonald's employees to say, "See you soon!" Am I the only one who thinks this is kinda peculiar? Why 'See you soon'? why not 'Have a good day!' or 'Thank you for coming!'? Oh well, I guess there's nothing else to say other than...

Tomorrow is Halloween. What am I doing? Probably sitting at home dog-sitting, reading my books, and watching movies. I would get dressed up, but I think I'd be the only to see the costume. Oh well, so it won't be a thrilling Halloween, no big deal. What are your plans?

On a side note, I finally bought the Band of Brothers DVD set...and I'm oh-so excited to watch it as soon as I finish the book.

Malachi Chapter 1

Tonight, my community group and I are going to be studying the book of Malachi and discussing what it means to fully commit to God and how we can give him our best or "first fruits". I'm excited because I'm going to put out some crappy food (rotten banana, unripe grapes, and some tiny pieces of chips) as a subtle illustration and insight into what we will be discussing. It really represents what kind of sacrifices the Israelites were offering God in the temple.

A Cogitation on Coffee Shops

Perhaps it is the immediate relaxation and cozy atmosphere that greets people at the door? Or maybe the countless choices and combinations available to satisfy nearly any flavorful desire? Well, whatever it is, there seems to be something about coffee shops that stimulates the senses, encourages enjoyment, and draws crowds from every social stratum.
I have personally been to a number of coffee shops of different shapes and sizes. They all seem to have their own distinguishable characteristics that set them apart from each other. For some, it is their fashionable decor. For others, it is their quickness and/or quality of service to the customer. What it really comes down to is answering the question, "What do you prefer?"
Where I live, there are a slew of coffee shops to choose from, but my all-time favorite is the "It's A Grind" chain. I had the opportunity of visiting the local café and was once again satisfied with my expectations and preferences. For those of you who haven't had the joy of visiting an "It's A Grind," I will attempt to describe the experience. Imagine walking from the parking lot into a comfortable lounge filled with armchairs to your liking. From there, you make your way to the counter with a view of the menu that will meet your desires for a delectable drink. You are then instantly greeted with a cashier that can only be described as "the friend you never knew," and they wish to fulfill your coffee drink dreams. After placing your personal order, you are welcome to treat yourself to one of said cozy chairs, and after a brief moment, your refreshment is not all only prepared but brought to you. As you sip your delicious beverage, you are free to curl up in a good book, take advantage of the free Wi-Fi, enjoy the selected music playing at a pleasing volume overhead, or engage in some pleasant conversation with others.
I hope this gave you a glimpse of what a visit to this coffee house is like and encourage everyone to drop by one of your local "It's A Grind."

At the end of class last week on Wednesday, my writing prof makes a promise to us, "If you guys will read the two articles I told you about and write the cause & effect essay and bring it on Monday, then I promise to have your previous essays graded and ready to hand back to you. Yesterday, I wrote the essay on the violence in Americaa and was rather content with the end result. I woke up this morning at 6am and went to the 8am writing class. I got to the classroom a few minutes early, and there were a few classmates but no teacher. So I went to the computer lab printed out a copy of my essayb, stapled it, and logged off the computer. I came back to the classroom and there were more students, but still no teacher. So I sat down and checked my school email to make sure there weren't any last minute announcements for the class like "BTW No Class Today!", but no cigar. 16 minutes pass and the whole class was present but once again, no teacher. Finally, one guy poses the question, "So, how long you wanna give her?" and we all come to a decision of waiting until "20 after" and then leaving class (and turning our essays into her box.)
I was actually a little worried about her. It's very possible that she had car trouble or something, but I think it goes without saying, the moral of this story is: "Don't make promises you can't keep!"

b Which actually took really long because the printer in one of the labs was broken, so then I had to go to a different lab, log in, download the essay, print the document, etc.

Drum Sticks & Practice Pad

Calling All Fellow Musicians! What drum sticks should I buy? (I like Vic Firth's, but which model?) I found a practice pad on Guitar Center's website from Remo and I think it'll be good for practicing in my room, but I need some sticks, so please help me out!! I think I remember using 5A's, but I can't fully recall.

SIDE NOTE: The Drum Sticks have to be from Guitar Center!!
